Foundation

“De Boni Arte” or, in English, “The Art of Goodness” Charitable Foundation is an independent social non-commercial organization. The mission of the Foundation is to promote the European sacred music in Russia, to support young Russian musicians and musicologists wishing to specialize in this area of knowledge, professional training for music teachers, musicologists and performing musicians. The Foundation works together with various cultural and educational organizations, both religious and secular, diplomatic representations, cultural centers and the mass media.
The history of the Foundation began with the concerts of sacred music which were organized in Moscow by a musicologist Valentina Novakovskaya. At the dawn of the 1990s she began to study  Gregorian chant and the sacred music of Western Europe.  The Russian musical institutions of higher education did not provide such a specialization, and she went to study in Warsaw. Having come back in 1997, she started to organize concerts of the European sacred music in the Catholic church of Saint Louis des Francais located close to Lubianka in Moscow, and, since 2000 has been organizing such concerts in the Catholic Cathedral in Malaya Gruzinskaya street. The concerts were very popular and became a regular event.
In December 2001 “The Art of Goodness” Charitable Foundation was founded with a goal of cultural enlightenment in mind.
Annually the Foundation organizes more than a hundred concerts of sacred music attended by some 30 thousand people. The public is offered various concert cycles dedicated to special themes, including the ‘lecture concerts’. A number of large musical dramas were staged, such as Christmas mystery plays (in the years 2002 and 2007) and the Baroque Passions by Bach (2008) and G. Gebel (2009). In the year 2007 a project under the title “The Organ Mystery” was exhibited in the Cathedral as part of Moscow International Photo Biennial. In 2009 the first International Christmas Festival took place and became an annual project. The Foundation works together with many philharmonics, concert halls and organizations of Russia. It enjoys the exclusive right to hold secular musical happenings in the Catholic Cathedral in Moscow. The concerts organized by the Foundation are free for members of the social service centers, war veterans, societies for the disabled and children’s homes.
The big pipe-organ “Kuhn”, inaugurated in the Moscow Roman-Catholic Cathedral in 2005, was installed under the patronage of “De Boni Arte”.  At present the Foundation is the keeper of the organ, which belongs to the four best organs of Moscow. A European Sacred Music Friends’ Club has been created by the Foundation in order to help development of the organ culture in Russia.
The educational activity of “The Art of Goodness” began with occasional master classes and seminars led by teachers and organists coming from abroad. In 2002 a choir named “De Boni Arte” – a group of young musicians interested in the European sacred music – was gathered by the Foundation. In the year 2007 a new project, a Festival-Contest of young organists and composers “Soli Deo Gloria”, was started. In 2009 a special Course “Western Church Music” was opened, to gather in Moscow the world’s leading scholars of Gregorian chant. The subjects taught in the Course have no counterparts in the Russian musical institutions of higher education, while Gregorian chant and the sacred music of the Middle Ages is the historical fundament of Europe’s musical culture.
